Most of our tips focus on techniques for catching bass and related tips. However, keeping your gear in top shape should be considered very important. Many of us buy a good rod and reel after and while and somehow think they will magically operate forever without any maintenance.

However, annual maintenance is a must even with freshwater fishing. Reels require cleaning and greasing in order to keep them performing well and lasting a long time. Rods also require cleaning and when stored, should have a protective hard case that will prevent damage from falling objects, protect from getting bent and keeps them protected when on the road.

Humidity can also cause damage to your lures. Keep your lures clean and in dry areas - especially for antique lures and keep them free from dust.

... that saltwater fishing causes a lot of wear and tear on your fishing reel? Salt are very corrosive and easily and quickly gets into the working components of your reel. If they are not cleaned regularly, they will eventually seize up the gears. For best performance, following the reel cleaning instructions provided when you purchased the reel.

Begin by wiping down all exposed surfaces with a damp soapy towel. Use cotton swabs dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean the spool spindle and metal parts inside the spool housing. Alcohol dissolves and removes dried salts and minerals that can corrode and grind down metal parts.

Add a drop of reel oil to the spool spindle and to the line level on a baitcasting reel.
