If you do not live near the west coast of North America, there are plenty of other bass that offer the same level of fight for your region.

Distribution & Habitat

Kelp Bass are an offshore ocean fish that live along the coast of North America stretching from the north border of California all the way down to the Mexican Peninsula. The best fishing is actually at it’s most southern end of this habitat.

Kelp Bass prefer rocky bottoms that have debris scattered across them like shipwrecks and sunken debris like trees. However, their main habitat comes from their name sake – the kelp forests. The kelp forests offer them protection and nourishment. They also enjoy the harbour environments like estuaries bays and river inlets with weed beds.

Not A Found in Lakes

The Kelp Bass is not found in lakes. It does not have the ability to survive in them even it it was to be introduced to a lake environment.

Osmosis diagram (bottom, first column): diagram depicting the osmosis principle: the movement of water molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.

Saltwater fish, like the Kelp Bass, live in denser water, due to the salt. Kelp Bass are always drinking water to replenish the water lost due to the salt. Their kidneys are always working hard to get rid of the salt. Freshwater fish on the other hand, like largemouth bass, do not drink water but are always getting rid of it. Their cells are less dense than water which causes them to attract it. The whole process is otherwise known as osmosis.
