White Bass Autumn Fishing
Drifting is another successful fall technique. Let the line out from seven to fifteen feet.
In late Summer and early Autumn, schools of White Bass feed near the surface of the water on shad in the southern United States. In the northern states and southern Manitoba, the White Bass are near the surface for pretty much all summer and into he fall they begin their migration to deeper water several months earlier than their southern counterparts.
Techniques for Schooling White Bass
These schools of White Bass are often large in size and feeding times are very frisky and aggressive with movement fast and little time is spent carefully considering a lure before striking. This is an exciting time to catch White Bass as they are so easy to catch and offer much excitement in the constant fight with another fight occurring right after the other. While they are aggressively feeding of baitfish, select fathead minnows, gizzard shad and golden shiners as your primary baits.
Spinners and Spoons
spinners and small spoons are highly effective including a 1/8 ounce white or chartreuse buzzbait with a plastic blade works well off rocky points in the Autumn. Adding a plastic worm or crayfish will increase your chance of a strike, but in these conditions, save your crayfish for times when the fish are not in a frenzy.
Food Preferences
Successful baits include leeches, crayfish, fathead minnows, golden shiners and gizzard shad. Adding a spoon or spinner will greatly increase your chances of getting a strike. While some angler prefer to use spinner and spoons instead of bait, combining the two will increase your odds of more frequent strikes. But again, if the White Bass are in a feeding frenzy, keep it simple a fish with what they are eating. Don’t over complicate things.
Drifting is another successful fall technique. Let the line out from seven to fifteen feet with baited jigs. Keep the bait off the bottom by six inches to a foot, keeping the line taught the whole time. Work your area by fan casting until you locate a school of fish. You may also need to vary the depth in which you present the bait.
Unlike White Bass fishing in the spawning season, White Bass are constantly on the move. Do not get comfortable with a spot because it is successful. They are able to move between 100 yards to a mile over a day. If you can learn the underwater terrain, you can predict their movements. A sonar device is highly recommended for fall fishing.
