Cutthroat Trout An Introduction
The Cutthroat Trout distribution, both native and current is not easy to provide without going into the detail for each species. We have presented the distribution for each sub species instead of putting them all in together.
Oncorhynchus clarkii clarki
The Oncorhynchus clarkii clarki is found in the northern parts of Prince William Sound, Alaska, south to the Eel River in northern California, USA along the west coast of North America in most streams emptying into the Pacific.
However, the Oncorhynchus clarkii clarki has been introduced in to many waterways, extending to many rivers and streams in the west as well as a few lakes in eastern North America.
Oncorhynchus clarkii behnkei
The Oncorhynchus clarkii behnkei can be found in the upper Snake River system in Idaho. A rather small river system near Interstate 16.
Oncorhynchus clarkii bouvieri
Oncorhynchus clarkii bouvieri is found in a handful of states in the montanous parts of the west. This includes lakes and rivers in Idaho, Montana, northeastern Nevada and Wyoming. The bouvieri cutthroat can be found year round in these states.
Oncorhynchus clarkii carmichaeli
The Oncorhynchus clarkii carmichaeli is found on both the east and west of the United States but in limited pockets. In the west, the Oncorhynchus clarkii carmichaeli is found in the far east side of the of Idaho and Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. In the west, they can be found in the shared river systems of Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland.
Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi
The Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi, is also known as the Westslopes Trout or Westslope Cutthroat Trout. They are native to northern Idaho, British Columbia and the upper Columbia river systems.
The Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi is also found in Alberta and Montana and are native to the upper Missouri River, the Milk River and the North Saskatchewan River.
Oncorhynchus clarkii pleuriticus
The Oncorhynchus clarkii pleuriticus is better known locally as the Colorado River Cutthroat Trout for obvious reasons, it can be found in the Colorado River. It can also be found in southern Wyoming, eastern Utah as well as northwestern New Mexico and Arizona.
Oncorhynchus clarkii utah
The Oncorhynchus clarkii utah is also known as the Bonneville Cuttroat Trout. It is native to the river systems of Utah, Wyoming, Nevada and Idaho.
Oncorhynchus clarkii virginalis
The Oncorhynchus clarkii virginalis is also known as the Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout. Its current distribution is much smaller than its native distribution of two hundred years ago before human activity was in earnest in the area. The Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout is found in the Canadian, Pecos and Rio Grande river systems of the western United States.
